The Neighsayers - Royal Ascot Day 5 Review
Royal Ascot Day 5 Review
Chesham
Day 4 started with performance of the week, but that was quickly out done by BEDTIME STORY. She was simply brilliant here, she’ll likely not be a betting proposition for a while but if she can reproduce that then it’ll be a joy to watch. She got Ryan smiling, she’s good. PENTLE BAY bred to get better with time and distance and ran nicely here for new connections. BRIAN looks one to take Sylvester Kirk to the big meetings, a Chelmsford maiden producing a 3rd and 4th at Ascot, who’d have thought that…
Hardwicke
CONTINUOUS was put up Antepost by Elliot and provided more value soup for dinner. He loomed up and found little for pressure, but looked like he’d come on for the run. Now for the moment of the week, I’m sure everyone in racing is delighted for Callum Shepherd getting his big day in the sun after all that’s happened previously and proved himself as a jockey for the big occasion. He had ISLE OF JURA in position A1, he never looked like losing inside the final 2 furlongs. MIDDLE EARTH ran an absolute stormer from track position, held dead last and just unable to make any impression. He’s a group 1 animal.
Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee
KHAADEM travelled over the top of these like the proverbial good thing. Didn’t win as easy as he looked like he might have done thanks to SWINGALONG being a tough filly on the front end. VADREAM ran a cracker on ground that would be firmly against her, which again marked up by the fact that the race was ran in almost 2 groups, with her, THE WIZARD OF EYE and MITBAAHY all racing well rear and the middle of those 3 has to be another great proposition when seeing 7 furlongs again. If he doesn’t get put up for this, he’s yet another runner for the International back at Ascot. WASHINGTON HEIGHTS travelled best bar the winner, but he weakened quickly. He has a lofty rating now, probably flattered by track position when he won the Abbernant and likely stuck between a rock and a hard place now.
Jersey
What can you say about HAATEM, 4 runs in 2024 so far and he’s classic placed twice and twice a group 3 winner. I’d love to see him over 10 furlongs too but he showed an unbelievable attitude here, he looked for all money like he was beat and battled back to get his nose down where it mattered. KIKKULI looks every bit a group horse after 2 placed efforts so far at 3 in pattern company. TASK FORCE moved into this okay but ended up running sidewards rather than forwards for a position and had a hopeless task far side, nothing got involved from there. NEVER SO BRAVE worth an upgrade here for me too, the 2 prominent with him fell out the telly finishing 14th & 15th, where as this lad stuck on all the way and well worth his place.
Wokingham
A fair race this, track benefitted to be stand side but all the pace was low, so should’ve suited everyone. LETHAL LEVI ran a monster here, would be very happy to bet him at York or Newmarket next time. In front for a long way and only passed late on. ORAZIO ran an unbelievable race from track position, my concern is about him backing that up though, he’s been well bet a few times now and not lived up to that expecting and you can be certain he’s over bet next time on the back of this. DARK TROOPER improved again just beaten by UNEQUAL LOVE who had first run on him. I’d say the latter could be France bound at some point, by Dutch Art out of a Pivotal mate, she should love soft ground. ALBASHEER caught the eye again, pretty unlucky in running but a few lb back from the handicapper will see that right in the future. Finally, FIVETHOUSANDTOONE had a horrific trip here, must’ve been searching for a gap for 2 furlongs, one didn’t come and he finished on the bridle. Looks as if he’s turn is coming on the turf.
Golden Gates
PALACE GREEN the unlucky one here, not certain he’d have got close to the winner but he would’ve been placed at least. Interesting to see what view the handicapper takes on this. Hopefully leaves him alone. HAND OF GOD made up a lot of ground In a short space of time down the outside, he looks nice though and should be able to pick another one of these up. Can’t believe a Ffos Las maiden has produced 2 Royal Ascot winners and a placed horse. Going The Distance, Hand of God and Go Daddy all running there last year.
Queen Alexandra Conditions Race
Whilst UXMAL was very good, surely we can find a better race to put in this spot? There’s enough bumpers throughout the year.
What a week that was. Superstars, potential superstars and those horses that everyone will have an affinity with all featuring this week. Irrespective of the SP’s of the winners, there wasn’t many races where the best horse didn’t win and that’s largely down an excellent racing surface. Racing & Ascot set their own precedent now and look forward to it continuing.
