The Neighsayers - The Week Ahead 2/4/24
Back to back winning weeks finally returned, we finished +6.5pts last week with only 4 runners but more importantly 2 winners. That takes us up to +30.78pts overall now too. Tough this week I thought, found more bets early in the week compared to toward the weekend so let’s hope we can start well. I’ll add Monday’s if there is any on to the end of this once they’re available to view.
Tuesday
14:15 Pontefract - Torcello
Could be a messy race this being only 3 runners. Torcello is an out and out front runner who could be hard to peg back if they let him have his own way. Billy No Mates likes to be held up and Throne Hall is versatile tactically and does have race fitness on his side but I can’t take the Amateur form seriously from Donny last time. Torcello never won fresh so it’s hard to weigh up how he runs first time out. Last year was in the same amateur race that Throne Hall won last week, in ‘22 it was in the Chester cup and in ‘21 was in a heritage handicap at Musselburgh, not displaying his front running tactics. At the prices he makes an appeal though and let’s not forget, he’s rated 8 & 11lb superior to these, so he could just be too good.
20:00 Wolverhampton - Locked N Loaded
This one has fairly obvious claims I thought. Staying on over the mile last time at Southwell, badly snatched in the last 50 yard would’ve been in with a chance there. That form advertised well, quickly with Van Zant (2nd) winning 5 days later. The selection been dropped 1lb here and takes an ever so slight drop in grade too, could make all the difference.
Wednesday
15:55 Catterick - Russco
I’m certain this horse is well handicapped on this ground. Rattled off a 5 timer back in 2021 from 59 all the way up to 79. Turns up here off 62 and having had this comeback run on all weather. Should’ve put him spot on for this.
19:00 Kempton - Follow Your Heart
I put this one up last time and probably a bit of poor judgement from me there, although winning round wolves, he probably needs a bend but a longer straight, e.g. Kempton, Southwell and here we are at Kempton. Zero Carbon and Kiwano likely to try and make it, would like to see a decent pace to aid chances but is ready to win.
Thursday
19:30 Wolves - Persian Phoenix
The cumulation of drop back in trip, grade and race set up looking likely to suit, I rate this a very decent chance. Should get it free on the front end here and not many better to ride wolves than Billy. Only one who may pressure is Koji.
Friday
16:05 Lingfield - Tadreeb
Will definitely reassess this one after declarations but I’d say he’s a winner in waiting after his C&D run last time and looks a decent opportunity here.
Saturday
15:50 Kempton - Elmalka
Visually impressive once she got the hang of racing on her debut in November. I think she’ll improve considerably again here. Half to Benbatl so plenty of class in the family, falls into the could be anything category.
Sunday
16:53 Bath - Sports Coach
I think 90 very much underestimates this horse, all speed and he’ll surely be competing in pattern races this year. Bath normally suits this style of racer when it’s quick ground but I don’t think we’ll be anywhere near that this weekend. Will check the draw/going after decs.
Monday
16:30 Lingfield - Wedgewood
Just has to be going close if not winning here. More than fair 4th in a much better race than this (0-68 last time, this race is 0-55). Fared best of the front runners at Southwell last time against some far superior rivals. Should be on the pace here but doesn't have to lead. Suanni and Autumn Flight like to make all so if we can sit 3rd behind them that would be ideal, but if we has to front run, it wouldn't dampen my enthusiasm.
