Weekly Eye-Catcher’s 1st – 7th January 2024

 

2nd January – 3:15 Ayr

 

Tommy’s Combat 

 

Beaten 30l by the winner but showed glimpses from unpromising position. Travelled well from off the pace but did shape like a stayer when asked for effort, Stayed on well final furlong for 4th. Follow up in trip, handicaps, or weak enough maidens.

 

2nd January – 6:30 Wolverhampton 

 

Solar Bentley 

 

Float ups over inadequate trips in novices, showed glimpses of ability on each start but never knocked about or shown the whip in 3 starts. Hoping for a mark in the low 60s for handicaps. 1m2+ probs ideal, may run well over stiff mile early 2024 tho.

 

4th January – 2:45 Lingfield 

 

Thornetonledale Max

 

Really nice physical, plenty of size and scope to improve. Ran well on a track what didn’t look to suit. Showed loads of ability whilst leaving plenty to work on, running green when asked for effort. Speed on the dam side but plenty of stamina being out a city scape, will be at home on more galloping tracks. Will look to follow this throughout the season as he should improve for more racing. Nice type.

 

5th January – 11:32 Southwell

 

Solomon 

 

Wont have been missed being a half to Soulcombe, but showed plenty to work with going down by a short margin. Showed much more boot than Soulcombe and was slightly fresh on the bridle. Did pick up well but was green when asked to go, can imagine he will have learnt loads from this debut and should be followed throughout the season. 

 

5th January – 12:02 Southwell 

 

King Of Spain

 

Half-brother to Mostly Cloudy and was well bet here. Expected this one to be outpaced doing best work late and that’s what happened. Shaped like a stayer, and ill be looking to follow this up in trip. Further the better, 1m2-2m. Really like this.

The Neighsayers - Friday 13th September

  No blog yesterday for the first day of the Leger meeting, mainly due to uncertainty around the ground we were getting. We’re back for day 2 though. 15:00 Doncaster - Big Mojo A lot to like about this horses chance today, starting with the drop back to minimum trip, showed his usual pace at York but failed to stay. Looks to be plenty of pace on in here too with Aesterius drawn on his side and then King’s Call, Zayer and Tropical Storm over the other side. If he sit’s just off these and strikes late he should emulate last year’s success for connections with Big Evs. A somewhat shock winner at Goodwood but should that was no fluke when running a good race at York when not staying as I’ve mentioned.  Selection - Big Mojo 5/2 General - 1pt win 16:10 Doncaster - Beatrice Shilling This favourite, Cabrera has to be taken on for me. The Neighsayers - Thursday 5th September

 Nice to get on the board for September yesterday with Snow Berry winning at 15/2 (or 9/1 if you had the luxury), but with the 2pt bet going down it wasn't as good as we'd hoped for, but profit on the day nevertheless. 17:35 Lingfield - Ormolulu Think this is well worth an each way bet now seeing 7 furlongs for the first time and returning to the all-weather. Dropped down in the handicap considerably this year, beginning on 79 and comes here off 70 with the jockey claiming 3. This is the lowest grade of race she's ever contested too, being a 51-70 and now in a fillies only race that can only be a positive too. The favourite takes up a lot of the market here and he's not guaranteed to get his own way in front this time, with Twilight Dancer and Beveragino in the race and I think he's well worth taking on. She was keen in her 3 year old campaign but the hood seemed to have worked the oracle there and hopefully can continue to do so with the slower tempo of a 6 furlong...
