Weekly Eye-Catchers 28th August – 3rd September 2023

28th August – 5:00 Southwell

Lady Gazelle

Ran well here on handicap debut under inexperienced rider. Travelled nicely over 6f but when asked for effort did take abit too long to wind up and respond, did best work late and was just knocked out the places. Looks the type to be nicely handicapped when going up to 7-8f with a more experienced jockey in the plate.

29th August – 2:00 Newbury

My Lady Samantha

Hasn’t shown much in first 2 novice runs but did catch the eye slightly here, in what I think will be at decent novice. Always in rear, travelling well but never put in the race, not knocked about. No world beater but marks around 50 should be workable in low graded Nursery’s.

30th August – 6:00 Kempton

Santa Rosalia

Showed little to nothing on first 2 runs but showed much more on 3rd start when posed with AW surface and when upped in trip to 8f. Travelled well in rear of mid div, made nice headway when niggled, not knocked about or shown the whip, plugged on for a 12l 6th. Considering the winner hacked up by 5l, he was only beaten 3-7l by very decent opposition. Will get a mark on Tuesday, I’m hoping they don’t murder him, 53ish would be workable. May be better on AW, handicaps over 8f would be ideal.

30th August – 6:05 Lingfield

Just Rita

Nice enough physically but was far too green to do herself justice here. Planted when stalls opened, lost many lengths, ran very green in rear, niggled for majority of first 2f, slowly got the hang of things, travelling well but wide, made challenge on the outside but had far too much to do, did all best work late under hand riding. Stable debutants normally come on for a run and she will have learnt loads from the experience. Should be very hard to beat in Fillies Maidens 7-10f, 8f being ideal for her at the moment.

31st August – 3:10 Navan

Mulgrave

SP of 66/1 suggested today wasn’t the day, my thesis was backed up in the race. Strangled out the back, always over racing, let him have his head slightly, travelling the best, took inside behind a wall of horses, hard on the bridle, no run, never asked to go when did get gap late, finished on the bridle. Could have won the race with a better run/ride, your guess is as good as mine when they will be trying with this one, may be worth following the money or in running play if ridden handy. Lower mark on turf is more than workable but could pop up back on AW.

31st August – 5:10 Navan

Honketonk Angel

Much better run from this one, travelled well on the rail, no clear run when making headway, switched inside ran on for 7th in competitive field. Looks handicapped to go close in 1m6-2m handicaps, my get decent prize due to trainer.

2nd September – 4:00

Spanish Rose

Another one brought to my attention by Mr Scotland. Was given an impossible task here on debut, restrained out the back after slightly slow jump, moved nicely enough in jockey’s hands, liked her head carriage a lot, challenged very late through horses, held onto for far too long but educated in the process. Can imagine she will come on significantly for the outing. Looks to have more ability than her shoddy breeding suggested, I’ll be keeping onside in maidens, strong bet if showing up at Fairyhouse, Naas or Gowran, trainer is +69.69 with all runners at them 3 tracks. (Decent enough sample size)

2nd September – 9:00 Wolverhampton

My Opinion

Big Eyecatcher for me here, travelled well in rear, maybe overaced at times, moving well into the straight, push comes to shove and Hes sent wide round the outside, 1 crack from the “ProCush” and he takes off past beaten rivals, never nearer 5th. Miles the best in this race, screams AW ARC bonus horse if the program permits. Could drop back to 6f but 7f round a bend is ideal. Once he gets a nice race set up, he should be bolting up. Hopefully some of the binmen don’t get another chance to ride this one, proper jockey booking would be significant. Worth following this AW season.

3rd September – 5:30 Tipperary

Kings Prince

Wouldn’t normally be looking to back an Ex Johnston but this did show enough today to be winning soon. Impossible task from unpromising position, made very good headway passing horses easily, ran on very strongly for 2nd. Look to back over 12f in future.
