Weekly Eye-Catcher’s 4th – 10th September 2023

4th September - 5:05 Chepstow

Basilette

Couldn’t give this away in the betting, slightly slow away, didn’t hinder too much, bumped around bend, responded well to that and was taken inside behind horses when probably should have come over the top, slightly outpaced but did run on under tender handling. Would like to follow over 1m2-1m4, hood didn’t look necessary to me, bonus if it’s taken off.

4th September – 5:30 Windsor

Qatar Moon

Nice debut, slow away, made nice headway from the rear, behind horses when stumbling badly, nearly unseating rider, ran on late past beaten horses. Showed a decent enough level of ability here and should be better going up in trip. Not normally a yard I want to punt but worth small bets once upped in trip, 7f-12f.

5th September – 3:20 Goodwood

Vino Victrix

Showed here that his tame early season efforts were ground related, much better here on good ground. In rear overaced slightly, travelling well come with good run on outside, front 2 have kicked on and jockey has looked after him, not knocked about. Looks primed for another crack at the Cesarewitch, a race he ran very well in last year. Will look to back him there if draw and going in suitable.

5th September – 5:05 Goodwood

Aplomb

Twice the binman on board has given this horse complete stones, held up in rear, travelling smoothy, good headway but played far too late, hands and heels until final half furlong, flapping about but no connection with the horse, fast finishing 3rd. Should have won his last 2 races, get the binman off for a proper jockey and he will be winning for sure. 8lb lower than his 6th in the 2022 Ayr Silver Cup, surely looks the target? Hes in savage order and should be backed in either Silver/Bronze Cup. Ready for a big pot. Large bet at Ayr

6th September – 4:25 Southwell

Gypsy Whisper

2nd time she’s made the eyecatchers this year, broke slowly in rear, outpaced over 7f not really picking up the bit, come standside into the straight and got stopped when coming with strong run, got gap then stopped again inside the furlong, jockey let her come home in own time. She’s building up to a few wins now and she’s starting to look nicely handicapped. Return to a mile + better jockey on I will be looking to back.

7th September – 2:30 Haydock

Elliot

2nd time Hes caught my eye in 3 quick qualifying runs for a handicap mark, showing plenty of zest and speed, not finding at the business end, more than likely lacking fitness. Travelled well behind decent enough horses, was beaten far enough not to kill his mark. Wouldn’t mind seeing him gelded, I’ll be looking to follow this one into handicaps. Marks in the mid 50s will be more than workable.

7th September – 3:30 Haydock

Victorious Street

Nice debut, travelled well behind leaders, asked for effort, responded well but was denied clear run multiple times, race had already developed Infront of him and came home in own time. Nice US page so would be having a big bet if rocking up for an AW maiden, decent bet on turf also.

7th September – 3:40 Salisbury

Soprano

Sickener if you had backed this, she was miles the best here. Reared as stalls opened forfeiting lengths (8l ish by the time she had recovered) , travelled with zest in rear , made challenge late enough, passed decent enough horses easily, ran on very strongly for 3rd. moral winner for me and she showed she’s in fine fettle at the moment. Would be a max bet for me in the G3 6f Firth Of Clyde stakes on the 23rd September, Could end up in the G3 Rockfel over 7f what would also be a decent size bet. Deserves a black type win.

9th September – 5:05 Leopardstown

Dartan

Great run over inadequate trip, always slightly outpaced in rear, niggled 4f out and responded well, asked to make up ground around 2f out and took too long to respond, eventually staying on well in the final furlong, clocking good sectional and closing %. This horse is in fine fettle and is crying out to go back up in trip. The Irish Cesarewitch in late September should be the next port of call, as now he is rated in the 90s, he should get in off a low weight. 66s is available, I’ve seen worse 66/1 chances.
