Norfolk Stakes 5f 2yo (Thursday)

Loads of promising 2yo speedsters on show here, with the very fast Elite Status being general 6/4 fav after a very impressive National Stakes win at Sandown. He takes up a large chunk of the market here and it wouldn’t be my way of playing at them prices in what looks a very competitive race, so I am very keen to take him on with an alternative EW angle.

NOCHE MAGICA is who I will be siding with EW after showing ideal credentials for a race of this nature. Made a very good impression on debut after showing a very high cruising speed matched with a nice turn of foot, putting his race to bed with ease. Stepped up in grade for the Marble Hill G3, where he travelled with his usual zest to the furlong pole, but in my opinion was outbattled in the finish by a stronger stayer at the 6f trip. It didn’t come as a surprise to me that he would be stepped back down in trip for his Royal Ascot bid, with the stiff finish on the straight track more than likely playing to his strengths. He will get a lovely tow into the race with many prominent horses looking likely to line up, giving NOCHE MAGICA the perfect race setup for style of racing. 10/1 is currently available, what is fantastic value in a race with this market setup. I would expect him to go off closer to 5/1 and put up a very good showing.

Selection – Noche Magica EW (10/1 William Hill , 8/1 General)

Duke of Cambridge 1m 4yo+ (Wednesday)

This doesn’t look a vintage renewal of this race and I’d envisage a few of these not to be declared too. A yard who does like to declare them here is the John & Thady Gosden yard, who have enjoyed a lot of recent success in this race and I don’t see that stopping here. The Gosden yard have trained 2 of the last 3 winners of this race, so they clearly know the type of filly needed to win this race.

Jumbly is the market leader, who’s current best price is 9/4 which is generally available. She’s left the Roger Charlton yard over the winter and is now turned out by sweet baby Joseph. I think she’s more than entitled to improve on her yard debut where she was 2nd at this level however I still think there’s one with a better chance in here.

You’d be daft to ignore Prosperous Voyage too as she does have the best form in the book, but I don’t like Zoffany’s as the get older so I would be the daft one looking to rule her out.

LAUREL hailing from the aforementioned Gosden yard should be primed for this. I love how well she travels and she can find for pressure too. The race should be ruin to suit looking at the likely protagonists, with Prosperous Voyage likely to go forward if she isn’t slow away and Roman Mist has improved hand over fist when going to the front.

She was however very fresh in the Lockinge but I’m hoping that with another run under her belt that will have left her system and this drop in grade will see her to best affect.

LAUREL is definitely the main bet in the race however I’ll definitely be playing a saver on the day for Rogue Millennium in the place market. She’s another very strong traveller and looked to be the winner against Free Wind at the Dante meeting so she showed she’s definitely worth her place at this level. This is a drop in trip for her though so I can see her staying on late past beaten horses.

Selection - Laurel (3/1 Bet365)  - Rogue Millennium - Place Only

Ascot Gold Cup 2m4f 4yo+ (Thursday)

The absence of star stayer Kyprios has left this years renewal looking very lacklustre, as much as I respect Coltrane at the top of the market he’s no superstar for me. Eldar Eldarov looks as though he could improve for the step up in trip but he’s short enough at 3/1, instead I’ll be siding with one of my horses the follow in COURAGE MON AMI.

He made his seasonal return at Goodwood making light work of a mark of 98 and not looking as though he was stopping at the end of the 1m6f trip. He is still so unexposed and could literally be anything, the only question being the trip, but that is the case for a few here. At 10/1 (Betfair/Paddy Power) I’m happy to pay to find out.

Selection - Courage Mon Ami (10/1 Betfair/Paddy Power)
