The Neighsayers - Derby Preview

 Betfred Epsom Derby

As we alluded to in yesterday’s oaks runner by runner preview, we haven’t the time to go live on Twitter spaces, but we couldn’t not preview one of the best race’s in the world, if not the best.

Adelaide River – 66/1

Soundly beaten the last day by Arrest and it would be hard to see him getting close to overturning that form. His Dam, could it be love went best on quick ground so that could offer some confidence, but I’d be steering well clear here. She ran her best short of a mile and I think the trip will stretch him. Could pick up a Group 3 over 10 furlongs.

Arrest – 9/2

I can’t see the market move for this one in all honesty? It has to be the Frankie factor. He looks a stayer out and out and his action suggests he wants soft ground, which he couldn’t be any further away from here. I’d definitely be more inclined to back him for the St Leger than this. Does have Group 1 form but I don’t think today will be his day. Wide draw should be against him.

Artistic Star 33/1

Unbeaten in both starts so far and has done in nicely in both starts but I’m not sure that form will measure up here. He may well be a group performer in time and is drawn nicely here. Dam was a sprinter so doesn’t inspire confidence even being by Galileo. Avoid.

Auguste Rodin 7/2

Well, where do we start here? It would be a mammoth task to overturn that guineas run to go close here. He’ll be much better back on top of the ground that’s a given but the current price is horrid. He’d have to be touching 5/1 or above to consider backing. He does have a plum draw though going back through years and the number of winners that have come from stall 10. Can let him well at current prices.

Dear My Friend 125/1

Fair play to the Middleham Park team for landing a runner in the greatest flat race, but I think that’s all he’ll be. No Chance.

Dubai Mile 18/1

This lad is the bomb proof each-way selection in the race. Already a Group 1 runner, beating Arrest and Adelaide River at Saint-Cloud. I think this trip will suit Dubai Mile than it would Arrest. Had a perfect Derby prep by finishing a staying on 5th in the Guineas. Should be okay on top of the ground too. Each Way plays.

King of Steel 66/1

An absolute brute of a horse. He’s such a big, strong horse he’d take your eye out in the parade ring. I’m not sure the undulations of Epsom will suit him, but it’s a nod in his direction that connections are persisting with him here after being taken out the stalls in the Dante. I think he’ll be much better on a flatter track. Avoid.

Military Order 9/2

This is my idea of the winner, you can’t not like what he’s done so far. It goes without saying that his win in the Derby trial at Lingfield even with it being transferred to the all-weather. The AW course is much, much tighter than the turf course there so do it in the way he did, just shows the class he’s got. He’s drawn in 9 which again is another plum draw. Should confirm that form and likely to improve on it with Waipiro. Win Bet.

Passenger 13/2

Very impressive debut in the Wood Ditton at the craven meeting and stepped forward again on that to finish 3rd in the Dante and he was unlucky to say the least. Supplemented here for £90k which is another vote of confidence. I like him very much so as a type, he seems a very straight forward horse and should be able to deal with the undulations of Epsom. Each Way Shout.

San Antonio 33/1

A live outsider for ‘the lads’ here, he should improve for the quicker ground and the step up in trip again. Wasn’t stopping at the finish in the Dee Stakes and Will likely sit behind the leaders and is drawn to do just that. Place Market’s only.

Sprewell 12/1

Can see why he’s been well enough found in the market since that win at Leopardstown, but I’d be against him massively. Another one who seems ground dependant and unfortunate for connections here, it seems to be soft ground. Stay Clear.

The Foxes 14/1

The winner of arguably the most important Derby Trial, The Dante but the market doesn’t seem to like him on the back of that and I’d tend to agree. I think over the extra furlongs in this Derby trip I think White Birch and Passenger would overturn the form. I didn’t like how he hung right also and if he hangs right into the Epsom camber, his race could be over sharply. Avoid.

Waipiro 25/1

If I’m a fan of Military Order, I can’t not be a fan of this lad too. He holds definite each way chances given his draw also. Should appreciate the quicker ground and should also appreciate being back on the turf. Each Way Claims.

White Birch 12/1

Unfortunately, I think his race is over thanks to the draw. However, his running style does offer hope that he might get in and get cover. He likes to be held up so he may take a tug on the reigns and sit him cold. A slight concern about that though, if he misses the kick and is on the back foot early, he will certainly have no chance. Bet in running if you like him.

Selections

Military Order 9/2 2pt win

Waipiro 25/1 0.5pt E/W

San Antonio 7/2 4 place betting

Passenger 13/2 1pt E/W
