Weekly Eye-Catchers 9th – 16th April 2023

9th April - Redcar 3:26

Tarbat Ness

Looked a completely different horse mainly due to the aid of first-time headgear, travelled so well through nutritional ground, just failing to pick up the winner who got first run and made all. Will look to back in low grade 1m6-2m handicaps, softer the ground the better.

9th April - Kempton – 2:20

Ponga

Keen to post and showed coltish tendencies in the prelims but ran a very good race on debut showing plenty of speed, only being edged out by a fancied Archie Watson horse. Showed more than enough to win a maiden NTO.

9th April - Redcar 4:01

It Just Takes Time

Travelled enthusiastically on a wing down the middle of the course, looked to be coming with a good run but weakened out of things. Will come on tones for that run, giving connections a better chance of winning the Yorkshire Super horse 100k prize. Back over 7f or stiff 6 at Yorkshire tracks he hasn’t won at. (Doncaster, Wetherby, Pontefract, Catterick)

9th April - Redcar 4:36

Just Frank

Changed yards over the winter, joining a yard who does well with similar types. His run at Redcar was a complete float up more than likely with a big day in mind in the future. Done previous winning in the back end of the season, so will be backing him in all back end 6f Handicaps.

10th April - Pontefract 2:30

Shotley Royale

Trainer Ruth Carr doesn’t have the greatest record first time out hence the rather large SP. Ran with a decent amount of credit in what was an okay maiden, showed enough speed to suggest 6f again would be fine. Could pop up at a decent price in a maiden.

10th April - Pontefract 5:05

Mr Strutter

An old favourite who still shows Hes still bang into his racing after a very good 4th on seasonal debut. Ran keen and fresh through the early part of the race, travelled well on the soft ground, slightly impeded when not clear run, ran on well under tender handling. 7lb below his last winning mark, could see him return to Catterick where he is a multiple course winner.

11th April - Catterick 5:20

Tantalus

Fancied him to run okay in this, didn’t look fully at home on the ground, coming with a good run in-between horse’s, had the door shut on him put all ends to his chances of winning. He’s loitering on a nice mark, ready to strike over 6f on quicker ground.

14th April - Southwell 6:00

Golden Maverick

Complete non jigger this, ridden cold out the back in what looked a very poor handicap. One of the last off the bridle, jockey sat for far too long, tenderly handled ran on very well, only whipped couple of times in final furlong, ran on very strongly for 3rd. wasn’t off a yard, will win next time out now they know what they have got. One for low grade 1m handicaps.

15th April – Wolverhampton 8:00

Hopeforthebest

Ran a very good race from a plummeting handicap mark, mainly due to the aid of first time toungestrap and cheekpieces. Came 2nd in the end but could have won with a more vigorous ride. No world beater again but will go close in low grade 9f-10f handicaps.

16th April – Curragh 4:20

Aljady

Ran a staggering race against a huge pace bias, ridden prominent, travelled very strongly in first time blinkers, plugged on for 4th but was easily swallowed up by held up runners. Mark that run up massively as the prominent horses from the race finished 8th,10th,11th, 12th and 13th. Not won since 2020 but can go close in and handicap over 5 or 6f in the blinkers.

16th April – Curragh 4:55

Machnamh

Not off a yard this, was in a nice mid div position, could have been put in the race earlier but wasn’t. inexperienced jockey gave it no chance of winning, very weak handling, was even retrained coming up to the line to stop it finishing 4th. Huge Eyecatcher, back next time with either McAteer or Cleary booked.

16th April – Curragh 5:25

Improving

Massive bounce back to form with this one, came with a very good run on the far side but was defiantly on the wrong side of the track with the winner coming down the Standside. Weakened late but managed 5th what was a great run. Would like to see a toungestrap back on. Hes ready to strike over 6f.
