The Neighsayers - Weekly Eye-Catchers 1st-8th April 2023
Weekly Eye-Catchers from April 1st- 8th April 2023
Doncaster 1st April – 1:50 5f Brocklesby Stakes
Tees Douge
Ran much better than his finishing position of 11th suggests, missed the break, rushed up prominent, showed lots of speed but the soft ground blunted his finishing kick, and he weakened out of things. Got a very good AW pedigree so would be betting him over 5-6f on any AW track, may wait for nurseries. Entered at Southwell, Sunday 9th April.
Doncaster 1st April – 2:25 1m Spring Mile
Warning Sign
Raced far side for a large majority of the race, kicked clear of those drawn around him with ease, but couldn’t make an impact in the race due to major track bias. Ran very well in the circumstances, will be backing over 1m with a more experienced jockey in the plate.
Doncaster 1st April – 3:00 6f Cammidge Trophy Stakes
Ehraz
Ran a very good race on ground what I thought wouldn’t be best suited. Gelding operation clearly had a very positive impact. An early season target could be the Abernant stakes in late April, where he would be very competitive on quicker ground.
Doncaster 1st April – 3:35 1m Lincoln Handicap
Awaal
One of the more obvious Eye-catchers, Ran a fantastic race from the front, travelling very well through the race but getting collard in the final half a furlong by the winner. Sectional times suggest that he the pace of the race was very strong, suiting held up runners, making Awaal's effort even more promising. Will be following him into better company.
Doncaster 2nd April – 2:10 1m1½f Handicap
Cloudbreaker
Ran a great race in conditions what wouldn’t have suited Cloudbreaker. She travelled very well during the race, but her finishing effort was tame due to bottomless ground at Doncaster this weekend. She has plenty of talent and could see her going close on quicker ground. 10f on quicker ground she's a good bet.
Leopardstown 2nd April 2:00 1m Fillies Maiden
One For Mum
Came last beaten 25l but that was expected based off her SP of 100/1 in this final run for a handicap mark. Ran very keen throughout the race but was still travelling okay on the bend. Her over racing early had its effect and she weakened in the straight. Her dam was an out and out 6f horse, as well as her other progeny, supporting my thesis she will be better when stepping back down to 6f. She’s shown more ability than her finishing positions suggest, indicating she could get a exploitable handicap mark. Back her in handicaps over 6f.
Leopardstown 2nd April - 3:10 7f 1000G Trial
Matilda Picotte
Ran with the choke out for the whole race, somehow managed to finish 2nd in which granted didn’t look a strong race but did very well to finish in the places with the way she ran. Would like to see her back over 6f or in a hood over 7f.
Ascot 2nd April - 3:45 2m Handicap Chase
Hatcher
A rare jumps eyecatcher from us. Ran a stormer at a huge price, Wind Op looked to do the job massively. I don’t think the Skelton’s will be too happy with how close he finished to the winners as he wasn’t meant to go close at Ascot, but it was a great run with future targets in mind. Dropped from a mark of 150 all the way down to 130, he is ready to strike. Has Aintree entry.
Lingfield 3rd - April 5:15 6f Handicap
Repartee
Regressive on the level but every horse has its mark. Ran over 6f twice in quick succession, a trip what I think is slightly on the short side for him nowadays. Looked outpaced and never challenged the prominent horses. This is a horse what is 0/10 on the AW and 2/12 on turf, suggesting he will appreciate the return to grass. Has been dropped 10lb over the winter AW season, giving him a rather attractive mark of 65 ready for the turf season. Listed winner on turf at 3yo, could see him returning to Windsor where he got his black type. Back him over 6&7f on turf (more preferably 7f).
Thirsk 4th April – 5:45 5f Handicap
Captain Corcoran
Weak in the market but ran with significant credit on his first run for 110 days. He has never had a good record fresh so his running on 4th can be marked up significantly. Travelled very well from an unpromising position, meeting trouble in running but running on well under tender handling. Loves soft ground and he is one to keep onside when underfoot conditions are in his favour. maybe a return to his favoured Catterick?
Latin Five
I had ground concerns against Latin Five for his run at Thirsk, but he ran very well against the straight course draw bias off a depleted turf mark suggesting he is one to follow in low grade 5f handicaps. I would like to see him on quicker ground than what he encountered at Thirsk.
Lingfield April 7th - 2:05 2m AW Vase Marathon Handicap
Blow Your Horn
Ran a great race from the back of the field, was a rough race in behind, with Blow your horn not getting the greatest of runs into the straight. He ran on very well into a staying on 4th, a good bounce back on his previous form. He sits on a lowly mark of 72 now, he will be winning races over 1m6-2m in no time. Winless on the turf but ran well on it before. Mid-season target could be the Northumberland Plate Consolation race.
Musselburgh April 8th – 3:00 5f Scottish Sprint Cup
Vintage Clarets
@Swan1_Oliver was throwing expletives at the TV watching this one, major eye catcher in what was a very messy race in behind. Held up last closest to the rails, travelling very well with no room to make his move. The gaps opened late but the winner who had a much better track position had already settled the race, he was left to come home under hands and heels. He’s always been a nippy type but judging by his race at Musselburgh, he looks quicker than ever leaving options wide open. 5f or 6f it won’t matter, he is a sprinter to follow this year.
Musselburgh April 8th – 3:35 1m 5f Queens Cup Handicap
Euchen Glen
Feel like a fraud putting this lad in cos I think he’s an eyecatcher in every single one of his runs. A next time horse if there ever was one, he ran a great race running on into 4th doing all his best work late as usual. Hes nearly old enough to smoke this lad and its full testament to him as he is still majorly competitive in all the big field handicaps. Jorvik Stakes at the Dante meeting over 1m 4f next potentially, could be a steppingstone to a later season target. Will win a big pot this year.
Musselburgh April 8th – 4:10 5f Novice
Blue Prince
Well backed fav but a tardy start and slight greenness ruined his chances of winning. Looked slightly outpaced but was getting the hang of things late on. Questionable ride from the jockey who more or less gave up 2f out, didn’t knock him about whatsoever. Progression imminent with more experience and when stepping up to 6f.
Musselburgh April 8th – 4:45 5f Handicap
Primos Comet
Ran a screamer on his return to turf, ran on very well from the rear of the field to nick a place. He is 10lb lower than his last C&D winning mark, he will be winning races over 5f at Musselburgh very soon.
