The Neighsayers - Sky Bet Sunday Series

The Sky Bet Sunday Series returns this weekend and it begins north of the border at Musselburgh. Last year it was some of the most competitive racing we got to see on the calendar and this year promises to be much the same. So @racing_lew has put together his thoughts on his selections for the card.

(All horses will be based on ISP for no overnight price wankering)

15:45 - 3YO Sprint Apprentice Handicap

No prizes for originally here but I’m very strong on JER BATT. This will be his first run on turf for new connections, who do unbelievably well with these types (Zarzyni, Venterous) and the horses running style should suit Musselburgh perfectly. As we saw with the opening meeting of the season here, it paid to be on the front end.

JER BATT is the only real pace angle in the race, which should leave him to have a freebie on the front. He’s accompanied by the best apprentice in the field too, the wonder kid, Billy Loughnane. He can still claim 3lb here too, which is more than some of the lesser jocks in the field.

He’s still very unexposed here in England and based on his two Southwell runs, he has lots more to give and here seem’s a good place to start. Apart from Winter Crown many of the others have already showed there hand, so it’s between the two for me.

Selection - Jer Batt

16:45 Fillies Handicap

ANA GOLD is one I’m quite keen on. She has proved very, very to win with so far, however I’d say the yard switch to Karl Burke’s stable is a nice trainer upgrade. He was one who targeted these races last year, in particularly with Eileen Dubh.

She has finished in the first 3 in her last 5 starts, staying on at the finish all the time. I’m hoping the change of yard will bring a change in tactics and hopefully see her race more prominently to give her less to do in the finish.

There’s a couple in here which are less exposed but I’m not sure how much movement they have in there mark but it’s clear to see ANA GOLD can be winning off this rating.

Selection - Ana Gold

17:45 3YO Mile Handicap

The main event of the day for me, I’m fairly certain this could be the horse go close to winning the 100k bonus in this series. BAJAN BANDIT has some brilliant form in the book and even then when disappointing in his next 2 starts even though it was in better company. Sold out of the Qatar Racing operation, he’s now moved to the Grant Tuer yard who were another yard to have good success in this series last year and I think this horse could take them close again. Even if the market doesn’t, being 22/1 best price currently.

He’s been subsequently gelded and with connections only paying 20000 guineas for him, that will prove very shrewd in time.

He’s always sat close to the pace in his previous races, which could prove the place to be in this heat, with there looking to be a lot of pace on.

I could be very wide of the mark with this one, but I definitely wouldn’t be giving up on him this season if he does disappoint here.

Selection - Bajan Bandit

18:15 Sunday Series Handicap

GIOIA CIECA is one that’s looking to capitalise on a falling mark and with Dalgleish looking to get out the game soon, what better place to land one than in the Sunday Series.

He raced over this course and distance on his seasonal reappearance finishing 3rd behind 2 well handicapped horse, both of which have followed up with finishing 2nd and 3rd in their next starts in better races. He will have his 2nd run off the wind op here too which is something I’m keen to follow, as he should have the confidence back to finish his races off now.

On a Session is the danger as he’s one with much the same profile, lurking on a falling mark, but they might have even bigger pots in their sights than this.

Selection - Gioia Cieca

18:45 Sunday Series Sprint Handicap

This is a trappy affair, as sprint handicaps normally are but I’m hoping to have landed on the right one. I’ve sided with EDWARD CORNELIUS who has an excellent record fresh (2-2).

He’ll go forward early, like a few might but I’m hoping he’s just simply too good for these as he sneaks in at the top of the weights.

If there is an abundance of pace on, I’d expect Abduction to be flying home at the finish along with Lullaby Bay.

Selection - Edward Cornelius
